The Right Type of Air Purification System
for the Right SituationWhen a Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer System is Most Appropriate
1. Asthma, Allergies, Respiratory Problems, or General Indoor Air Quality Concerns. If your indoor air quality is relatively typical (meaning no major odor problems), then a Surround Air Ionizer system is most appropriate, especially since it allows you to more economically purify your home more thoroughly than other alternatives (as a result of the multi-unit packages). Even in normal indoor environments, there is a high level of pollutants that can aggravate the respiratory system, especially if you have asthma, allergies, or any other respiratory problem.
A Surround Air Ionizer purification system will thoroughly and economically purify most, or all of your home, without the risk of generating excessive ozone. The high density of negative ions produced by Surround Air Ionizers will effectively remove many of the floating particles in the air, most of which are not visible to the naked eye. Even most of the airborne bacteria is removed since their primary means of locomotion is by floating dust particles.
Even if you have a minor to significant odor problem, but are more concerned about the air quality for the entire home, then a Surround Air Ionizer purification system is still your best choice. Even with a significant odor problem, you can still gather multiple Surround Air Ionizers together close to the source of the odor, until the odor is eliminated or controlled.
2. Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). Most ozone/negative ions combination air purifiers produce an ozone level that is uncomfortable for most people with MCS. However, ozone does destroy a variety of airborne pollutants that negative ions do not remove, such as bacteria and viruses. The Surround Air Ionizer system produces a high density of negative ions, along with a level of ozone that is barely detectable, even for those with MCS.
3. Dust, Dust Mites, Pollens, Pet Dander, Mold Spores, and other Common Allergens. Negative ions are much more important against these types of airborne particles than ozone. Surround Air Ionizers produce a high level of negative ions, and can be economically placed in just about every room in the home, so the whole home can be ionized. Larger, single-unit systems can emit ozone throughout a larger part of the home, but the negative ions will still not travel outside the room in which it is placed.
4. Concerned about Whole Home, Not Just Certain Area or Room. If you are concerned about purifying most or all of the home, then the Surround Air Ionizer purification system is your most economical and effective choice. It allows you to place a source of negative ions and ozone in just about every room and section of the house, at a price that is comparable to a larger, single-unit system. Even a very powerful ozone and negative ion air purifier can only ionize a single room anyway, and it will probably not be able to provide ozone purification for the whole home.
5. Mild or Moderate Odors, or Strong Odors in Small Spaces. The Surround Air ionizers are not the most powerful air purifiers when it comes to removing odors, but this model does help with odors, especially in smaller, enclosed spaces. If the odor is not too severe, then the Surround Air is often a perfect choice. There are units on the market that can produce relatively high ozone levels, which makes them more effective at removing strong odors. However, if misapplied, these strong ozonators can also result in excessive ozone levels in the area where they are placed. They tend to be most appropriate for stronger odors, such as heavy cigarette smoke, strong mold/mildew smells, strong chemical smells (such as those found at a nail salon), etc.
When a More Powerful, Individual Unit is More Appropriate
Note: "More Powerful" units produce more ozone than the Surround Air purification system, but not more negative ions. In fact, Surround Air Ionizers produce a higher concentration of negative ions than most "Larger Capacity" air purifiers.
Strong Odors. Surround Air purifiers are certainly effective against odors (including cigarette smoke), especially if you concentrate multiple Surround Air XJ-2000 units together nearby the source of the odor. Surround Air ionizers are also effective for odors in smaller rooms, especially rooms that can be sealed off to allow the ozone to build up stronger (such as a rooms with a door).
However, they are not as effective against strong odors as more powerful ozonating air purifiers, such as Spring Air purifiers. They can often remove a moderate to somewhat stronger odor as well as an air purifier that produces higher ozone levels, but it will take longer to do so (such as 24 hours or so).
Spring Air purifiers are more effective against odors due to the fact that they produce higher amounts of ozone. Ozone is more effective at removing strong odors than negative ions. In which case, an air purifier that produces a higher concentration of ozone is best. If the odor and pollution level is strong enough, the odor and the ozone will cancel each other out, so the ozone concentration will not become excessive, even with a more powerful unit.
You can tell if the ozone level is getting close to becoming too high by the smell. The smell of the ozone will become overpowering and obnoxious at a level quite a bit lower than the concentration where it can become a minor lung irritant. Click on the following link for air purifiers that are able to remove very strong odors: Spring Air purifiers
Heavy Cigarette/Cigar Smoke. This falls under the same category as "Strong Odors" (above). Keep in mind that negative ions are more effective at removing the smoke itself, and ozone is more effective at removing the odor from the cigarette/cigar smoke. In which case, the Surround Air units will be more effective at removing the smoke itself for small areas, and somewhat effective at removing the odor from the smoke, since they produce high levels of negative ions, and moderate amounts of ozone. Many other types of ozone air purifiers, which produce higher levels of ozone, may be more effective at removing the odor of the smoke, but not quite as effective at reducing the "haze" from the smoke, when compared to Surround Air ionizers.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer
How many units do I need?
To purify the entire home, you can place a Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer in every room or open section of the home that is 500 square feet in size or less. You may want to place two units in larger rooms or areas, especially if: (1) they are larger than 500 square feet; (2) there is a higher level of pollution in a certain room or area; (3) if it is very critical for a certain large-sized room or area to have clean air.
Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizers can cover up to 500 sq. ft. of open space, but can be safely placed right next to one another if you need fortified purification strength on a concentrated area for any reason.
If you are not able to buy a Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer purification system for each room, then you can buy enough for the most important rooms, such as those where you or a family member spend most of your time. Remember, the Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizers are very lightweight and portable, and can be easily moved from one location to another.
Where should I place each unit?
General rules of thumb include:
Elevated Location. The higher toward the ceiling you are able to place the Surround Air Ionizer air purifier, the better the ozone and negative ions will be distributed. It is not necessary to place the unit high off the ground though.
Air Flow. If you can place the unit near a source of air flow for the room or area, such as by a fan or supply vent, the better the ozone and negative ions will be distributed.
Open Area. The Surround Air Ionizer should not be blocked off so air cannot pass through and around the unit. Doing so will limit its effectiveness. Also remember that ozone and negative ions cannot pass through physical objects, so you should place it somewhere in the room that is open to the rest of the room.
Centralized Location. This mostly applies to larger rooms. Placing it in a corner or against a wall will typically suffice for normal-sized bedrooms. Just remember that the Surround Air Ionizers will emit negative ions and ozone about evenly in all directions.
Near Source of Pollution. The closer you can place the Surround Air Ionizer purification system to a source of pollution, the more effective it will be against that source of pollution. If you have a strong odor problem, you can gather together multiple units nearby the source of the odor until it is eliminated, or reduced.
Nearby Those Suffering from Headaches, Breathing or Sleeping Problems. Since the Surround Air Ionizer produces a subtle amount of ozone, placing it within a few feet of where someone sits or lies down is not a problem. In fact, it can be quite beneficial. Inhaling negative ions has a variety of health benefits. You might even try placing it within a few feet of someone in your family while they sleep. Since there is not a fan in Surround Air Ionizers, your sleep will not be disturbed.
Strong Odors / Cigarette Smoke
If you have a problem with cigarette smoke, or any other strong odor, you can gather together multiple Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer purifiers close to the source of the odor. Just gather together as many as it takes to remedy the problem. For optimal effectiveness in these situations, you should use as many units as it takes until the smell of the ozone ("grassy" smell) becomes stronger than the odor itself. If it gets to the point where the smell of the ozone becomes "chemical-like", then you should take one of the units away from the spot, or set one or more of the ionizers on the "Low" setting.
Which setting is more appropriate for my situation?
Each Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer can be set at "High", "Low", or "Off". In the vast majority of cases, the "High" setting will be most appropriate. The "High" setting simply means that the unit will run continuously. Even on "High" it is doubtful that the ozone level will become excessive, and there is no drawback with high negative ion levels since Surround Air Ionizers will not create "Black Wall" effect. If for some reason, the smell of the ozone becomes a little stronger than you would like, then you can adjust the ionizer to "Low". When on "Low", the Surround Air purification system will run on intervals of 2 minutes "on", and 3 minutes "off".
How do I make sure it remains effective for many years?
By simply performing the recommended maintenance (very easy to maintain), your Surround Air Ionizers will probably never require repair work. The only other element of the Surround Air Ionizer purification system that could potentially degrade is the negative ion producing electrodes (needlepoints). However, it is highly unlikely that they will ever wear down since they are made from stainless steel. Even if this happens, you can either sand down only the eroded part of the electrode, or buy a new set of electrodes ($10 per set). Even by simply sanding down the eroded part of the electrode, the needlepoints should last a lifetime, and doing so is very easy (explained in the owner's manual). But it is nice to know that you can buy replacement electrodes just in case.
How do I know my Surround Air Ionizer is working?
There are four check points to verify that your Surround Air XJ-2000 purification system is working:
Soft Hissing Sound. If you place your ear close to the front grill of the unit, you should hear a faint hiss from the "ionic breeze" emitted by the negative ion electrodes.
Subtle, Fresh Ozone Smell. If you position your face near the front grill of the Surround Air Ionizer, you should be able to smell the subtle smell of ozone. This will have a fresh "grassy" smell to it.
Improved Air Quality / Symptoms. Most importantly, you should notice improvements in your air quality (such as less dust in the air) and in symptoms relating to asthma, allergies, and other respiratory-related problems. You may even notice relief of sleeplessness and headaches, especially if you sleep or rest within a few feet of the Surround Air Ionizer.
Particulate on the Collector Plate. If you notice that there is residue, or even larger particulate that has accumulated on the metal collector plate inside the unit, then you know it is taking particulate out of the air.
Tiny Blue Lights. If you peer inside the front grill of the ionizer, you should be able to see a few of the pinpoint-sized, blue lights faintly glowing at the tip of the electrodes.
Maintenance
Only two quick and easy maintenance tasks need to be performed on each "Surround Air" XJ-2000 Ionizer:
1. Cleaning the Dust Collection Plate
The dust collection plate should be cleaned about once a month. Doing so is very simple. Make sure the unit is unplugged. You just need to loosen the two screws that hold the dust collection plate in. Then you need to pull the dust collection plate out (see photo above, plate comes all the way out), and wipe it off with a damp cloth. You should then wipe it off with a dry towel, and reinsert it back into its slot.
2. Cleaning the Needlepoints
About once every one to two months, you should wipe off the dust and particulate that accumulates at the tips of the needlepoints. Make sure the unit is unplugged. To do this, you first remove the collector plate (see the photo above). Then, the needlepoints will be accessible through the opening left by the removal of the collector plate. This makes it easy to touch each of the needlepoints with your finger. You can just use your finger to wipe the dust off each needlepoint.
3. Cleaning the Interior of the Air Purifier
The interior of the Surround Air XJ-2000 Ionizer should be cleaned every 3 to 6 months. Make sure the unit is unplugged. Loosen the four screws at the base of the unit to open the cover of the purifier. When doing so, you will be able to see the electronic circuitry of the unit. You then need to carefully wipe away or blow off any dust that has collected on any of the components. If you use a damp cloth to wipe away the dust, blow dry the interior of the air ionizer before replacing the cover, and turning the unit on again.
